Joseph Boughey finds some interesting details about the waterways on a free online archive from Wales, much of which relates to the Montgomeryshire Canal.

In the Winter 2015 issue of NB we looked at Welsh Newspapers Online, a searchable facility that’s free to use. The National Library of Wales, which created the newspaper site, has also launched Welsh Journals Online, a digital collection of journals and magazines running up to 2006. Other facilities that feature digitised journal collections, such as JSTOR (mostly for academic journals), are often behind paywalls. By contrast, WJO is freely available and searchable at journals.library.wales/.19th-century insights How can the use of WJO sources assist research? The history of some waterways is covered in older articles, an example being Montgomeryshire Collections, Vol 43, January 1934, on “The River Trade of Montgomeryshire and its Borders”. The author, A. Stanley Davies of Welshpool, a leading member of the Powysland Club (founded in 1867) wrote many pieces about the Welshpool area.
