Recently I came across some information about craft control by the Docks & Inland Waterways Executive which shows that they were already making amendments to the system before 1953 as David Blagrove indicated in his article (Winter 2014 NB). As early as September 1951, craft control was under review to make it more efficient. It appears that the district engineer’s office at Hatton had been removed from the list of offices, but now they wanted it brought back if the lock-keepers could do the work. Also either Minworth or Curdworth was being considered as a reporting office if a telephone could be installed, and Napton Junction was to be added too. The system of attending breakdowns was to be amended with better reporting of incidents, as the maintenance engineer did not always inform the nearest craft control check point, leaving head office and customers wondering why boats hadn’t arrived when expected.
