Brindley Gates on Bridgewater

Brian Houlton, who is currently working with the Bridgewater Canal Co to index and digitise its archives, has brought to NB’s attention these images of ‘Brindley Gates’ on the Bridgewater Canal, presumably the first canal on which they were installed (Spring 2010 NB). They were designed to lie flat on the canal bed until required either in an emergency or to carry out maintenance. The sluice gear that would enable the refilling of any drained length of canal can be seen about 2ft in from the sides of the gates in both the photographs and in the diagram.…
