Heritage Update: NarrowBoat, Winter 2011

In 1970 a film student made a documentary film of Blue Line’s Renfrew and Lucy carrying coal for Kearley & Tonge’s jam factory at Southall (“the Jam ’ole”). The 9-minute movie follows the Whitlocks, with their commentary, loading the boats from an NCB lorry at Atherstone, boating and locking along the canals, and unloading at Southall. The film was made only just in time; in October of that same year the traffic ceased, bringing to an end regular long-distance narrowboat carrying.
