I enjoyed your article on Box Boats (Spring 2011 NB). It reminded me of the research I did for the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port, relating to Box Boat 337 which is in its possession. Whilst carrying out that research I visited Astley Green Colliery where, until a few years ago, the old box boat Fred was being refurbished. However, it fell foul of vandals and was destroyed. They also have a box that they are rebuilding and this is similar to, if not the same as, the ones at Ellesmere Port. Terry Waldron, by email…
