Following up the article ‘Boxes by Boat’ (Spring 2011 NB), I thought readers might be interested to see this photograph of one of the Hardy Spicer tugs pushing a loaded dumb boat through the former Salford Bridge Gauging Stop in June 1966. A day boat lies sunk blocking the offside channel. Today’s boaters may not immediately recognise the scene as not only have the houses gone, but the canal is now covered by part of the original ‘Spaghetti Junction’ of motorways where the Aston Expressway joins the M6. Following its construction and local protests about the amount of construction debris left in the canal, the whole canal was drained and cleared, including the sunken boat.
