The Lichfield Canal restoration programme is the source of some gentle amusement in our home. Soon after we bought our current boat 20 years ago, I remember Mrs T asking when I thought the Lichfield Canal would be completed. My answer was a confident 20 years, far enough away to be realistic but close enough to offer hope. Helen clearly took this to heart because, during one of my many enthusiastic outbursts about the latest advance, she reminded me of my decades-old prediction and asked when, exactly, we could expect to move our boat between Huddlesford and Ogley. Well, I am now older, wiser and better versed in what it takes to restore a canal, so somewhat sadly I amended my guess to another 20 years.…
