Chris M. Jones explores photos from the Jack Parkinson collection showing barges at work in Goole docks on the Aire & Calder Canal taken on a viist in September 1966 when the canal was still full of commercial activity.
A closer look at the compartment boat hoist mounted on a jetty in South Dock, showing how the pans are positioned for loading when a coasting ship arrives to take a shipment aboard. The late afternoon sunlight from the west shows up the complexity of the structure and some of the hoisting mechanism. This view also affords a better look at the swing-bridge, with pedestrians crossing.
