Oxford Portland Cement

In the article about Oxford Portland Cement Co Ltd (NB Spring, p26), I noticed that its trademark was identical to that of the famous Morris Motor Cars Ltd, both of which were in full operation during the 1920s and based in Oxford. For those who don’t know what the trademark represents, it is an ox fording the River Isis. This mark is also the centrepiece of the Oxford heraldic shield. I thought trademarks were unique to one company and should not be duplicated by any other company. To me, it looks as though this trademark was used by three organisations.
