The Manchester Ship Canal is unusual among waterways illustrated on postcards in that, during the ‘golden age’ of postcard publishing (around 1907), it was only a little over ten years old, having opened in 1894. Due to the then relative modernity of the canal, there are a number of cards celebrating the continued expansion of the docks and facilities, while others show the engineering, of which one of the outstanding features was Barton Swing Aqueduct and its adjacent road-bridge.…
