Trevor Ellis continues his examination of postcard publishers’ photos of the Peak Forest

Marple Aqueduct attracted photographers even in the early postcard era, probably as the destination for Sunday strolls from either Marple or Romiley. The view shown is a relatively early one, having been posted in 1904. Although I have not made the attempt, I am sure that it would be impossible to recreate this scene today, due to over a century of tree growth. The card is actually captioned ‘Marple Viaduct’, so possibly the railway was the greater attraction then.
