The caption for the postcard of Kingston Mill, Hyde (NB Autumn 2020) says that the view is difficult to place nowadays. In fact the view is easily traceable using the excellent facilities of the map service provided by the National Library of Scotland at https://maps.nls.uk/index.html. Select ‘Georeferenced Maps’ and then, for this search, the OS 25 inch 1892-1914 series in the left panel, and as the background map, Open Street Map. From the OS map, Kingston Mill can be found on the west bank of the canal in Hyde, and the viewpoint of the postcard seen to be probably from the railway overbridge by the wharf. Varying the transparency of the overlay, the present-day map can be shown, with the bridge replaced by a much longer one over the M67. This certainly makes the view impossible to revisit. R.G.
